Memories from past times.
These officers were in the service of the Crown when I was at Frösö läger between 1872 and 1887 - I asked to be discharged 2 October 1887. I was happy when I was enrolled but even happier when I was discharged and became a free man again. Affirmed by Corporal No 8 Erik Bergner serving for the rote number 8, Berge on Frösö. I served The King and Crown for 15 and 6/12 years.

Jag var glad nälad närlev inmönstrat men enn gladare när jag fick avsked och blev en fri man igen. Erik Olofsson Bergner

This website is dedicated to Erik Olofsson Bergner and his descendents. Erik was born July 20, 1853 in Näskott parish / Jämtland / Sweden to Olof Nilsson and Anna Eriksdotter. He joined the Jämtlands fältjägarregemente in 1872, at which time he aquired the name Bergner. He served for rote number 8 in the village of Berge which is located on the island of Frösön.

On June 18 1876, Erik married Ingeborg Persdotter. Ingeborg was born February 2, 1847 in the village Hov, parish Ås to farmer Per Persson and Brita Apollonia Mårtensdotter. Erik and Ingeborg had 7 children. All of their children were born in the village of Svedje / Sunne parish / Jämtland / Sweden.

Erik and Ingeborg's children were:

  1. Olof Eriksson Bergner born & died July 30 1876 in Sweden
  2. Olof Eriksson Bergner (known as Ole), born January 21 1877, died July 19 1937 in La Grand township, Alexandria, Minnesota
  3. Per Eriksson Bergner (known as Peter), born June 2 1879, died April 27 1956 in Minneapolis, Minnesota
  4. Erik Martin Eriksson Bergner, born May 14 1881, died December 8 1892 in Sweden
  5. Axel Eriksson Bergner, born May 6 1883, died March 9 1945 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota
  6. Anna Brita Eriksdotter Bergner, born January 31 1885, died October 18 1945 in Sweden
  7. Otto Emanuel Eriksson Bergner, born December 6 1886, died January 12 1887 in Sweden

On September 29 1887, Erik's wife Ingeborg died. Three days later on October 2 1887, he asked for and receivied a discharge from his military service. In 1890, he was living together with his parents and his five surviving children on a farm in Svedje / Sunne / Jämtland / Sweden (Click here to see them in the 1890 Census for Jämtland län).

After Ingeborg's death, Erik had a daughter with Karin Staffansdotter. Their daughter was named:

  1. Märta Eriksdotter Bergner (Martha Wilhelmson), born November 27th, 1888, died March 10, 1971 in Tacoma, Washington.

In 1892, Erik Bergner emigrated alone from Sweden to Douglas County Minnesota. The following year, his three surviving sons (Ole age 15, Peter age 13 and Axel age 9) traveled alone from Sweden to Minnesota. Erik's daughter Anna Brita was deemed to be too young to make the trip, so she was placed with relatives - Erik's maternal uncle Erik Eriksson and family.

On December 19 1895, Erik married Elsie Olson. She was born as Elsa Olofsdotter on October 9 1872 in Linsell parish, Härjedalen, Jämtland län Sweden to Olof Olofsson and Gölin Olofsdotter. Erik and Elsie had four children:

  1. Oscar Elmer Bergner born August 7 1896, died June 11 1985 in Alexandria.
  2. John Arthur Bergner born October 19 1898, died March 4 1948 in Alexandria.
  3. Gustav Elford Bergner born March 7 1903, died July 5 1908.
  4. Gerda Bergner born February 24 1905, died May 5 1993 in Alexandria.

On August 22nd 1906, Erik's daughter Märta emigrated from Sweden, but her mother refused to leave Sweden. Märta was married and residing in Tacoma, Washington until her death on March 10 1971.

Elsie died on April 27 1908. On March 15th 1916, Erik married Anna Mattson.

Erik Bergner died on August 27, 1932 at Fergus Falls Minnesota. He is buried at White Garden cemetery, as are some of his children, which is located just West of Alexandria Minnesota.
